With a panoramic view over the vineyards in the rather overlooked wine region of Fronsac, Nicolle Croft opens her new tasting room to promote in particular the wines of the many ‘petits châteaux’ in the region of Bordeaux.
Fronsac is one of Bordeaux’s prettiest wine regions with its vine covered hills and views over its rivers (the Isle and the Dordogne). It is also one of its most historic known for its medicinal qualities.
One can see Fronsac’s 76m high ‘Tertre’ strategic point from miles away where Charlemagne had a château built in 769 AD. It is only 30 minutes from Bordeaux and a stone’s throw from St Emilion and gives you an insight into the real Bordeaux away from the hustle of St Emilion.
My passion are SIP (Small Independent Producer wines), authentic wines made by real people, those with wine-stained hands and soil on their shoes such as Chateau Gazin (on which the tasting room is based), Château Gaby another top Fronsac property along with Château Béard La Chapelle, St Emilion Grand Cru, Château Le Sepe, a wonderful white and red from the Entre Deux Mers or the best white in Bordeaux, Haut Grelot Côtes de Bordeaux, Blaye.
Food and wine tastings during which Nicolle can explain the basics of winetasting and food and wine matching are held at the beautiful setting with local food specialities from the local market in Libourne.
In addition Nicolle with her 25 years of experience in wine is able to organise more complex tastings including old vintages and vertical tastings of the same property to understand the very important concept of vintage in Bordeaux. Blending sessions can also be organised where you can blend your own wine from different grape varieties according to your own taste!
