Over 100 Bordeaux Cru Classe at negociants Millesima Tasting in Bordeaux
Eighteenth tasting in the cellars of Millesima in Bordeaux of over 100 Bordeaux wines, mostly Cru Classe, from the 2006 vintage held on Thursday 21st February. Hundreds of journalists and Chateau owners were present. Since tasting at the En Primeurs in April 2007 it was good to catch up with this vintage’s progress. Having spent its second winter in barrel and due to be bottled soon – we were able to taste a range of over 100 different wines from the different appellations side by side to compare.
I found the 2006 vintage in Bordeaux to be full of ripe concentrated fruit, good structure, wonderful freshness, firm tannic structure. The best were elegant yet powerful. More homogenous on the left bank than on the right bank. Graves tended to be dominated by wood for the time being. Some stunning concentrated Pomerols, some thin and light. Not consistant at all. Nicely balanced St Emilions with a freshness and ripe fruit others rather disappointing.
My favorite wines were;
Graves: Dom de Chevalier, Ch Malarctic Lagraviere, Ch Haut Bailly. Outsider – Ch La Garde
Pomerol: Ch La Conseillante, Ch Petit Village
St Emilion: Ch Troplong Mondot, Ch Figeac, Ch Canon La Gaffeliere, Ch Cheval Blanc, Ch La Mondotte. Outsider – Ch Fleur Cardinale
Margaux: Ch Palmer, Ch du Tetre St Julien: Ch Branaire-Ducru, Ch Saint Pierre, Ch Leoville-Barton
Pauillac: Ch Pontet-Canet, Ch Haut-Batailley St Estephe: Ch Montrose, Ch Lafon-Rochet Haut Medoc: Ch La Belgrave
